The MODS & ROCKERS 2000
Fave Musicians Guide
The films in the festival spotlight an astonishing array of British,
American and Canadian musicians. Most of them are seen performing - in
living Technicolor! In a few cases the musician is
involved in the movie as a composer or playing on the soundtrack. So -
check out the movies featuring your favorites!
Several of the musicians are associated with more than one film in the
festival - and you can check out each film.
There are capsule descriptions to provide background on some of the
musicians - particularly those who have had a lower profile in recent
years - or who never achieved the highest pinnacles of fame.

90's as the theme song of "Absolutely Fabulous")
Auger has acting cameos in the Monkees special and - possibly in Pop
Down (no one can remember!)
These days Brian is based in L.A. and still playing cool music under his
Oblivion Express band name. He even has a new album released in July

She was originally fan club secretary for the Yardbirds - before their
manager (and her future husband) Giorgio Gomelski suggested she take up
singing in seminal group

Festival!
- Chris Farlowe
- Brit rocker produced by Mick Jagger - including a 1966 UK #1 with
Jagger's own "Out Of Time" Career went off the rails when he revealed
himself to be a closet neo-Nazi - including a love of Third Reich

with a raspy voice...
Dollybirds!
Go-Go Mania!
- The Four Pennies
- Four lads who were one-hit wonders from Blackburn, Lancashire (of 4,000
holes fame) They were pioneers (with The Searchers) of a British
folk-rock sound. Their big hit was a gentle love song called
"Juliet" The trouble began when they recorded a Leadbelly song "Black
Girl" as a follow-up. Too many people in Britain at the time thought
like Chris Farlowe... (see above!) Bass player Fritz Fryer went on to
produce Squeeze and Motorhead (!)
Go-Go Mania!
- The Fourmost
- Liverpool lads favored by John Lennon who gave
them two 'non-Beatles' songs - which became UK Top Twenty hits - "Hello

Message To Love: The 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival
- Free
- Message To Love: The 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival
- Rory Gallagher
- Astonishingly underrated Irish blues-rock guitarist - with his band
Taste. Was wearing tartan (plaid) shirts when Neil Young was still in
buckskin - and before Kurt Cobain was a twinkle in his dealer's eye...
Rory was a great guitar player AND he invented the grunge look in 1969!
Sadly passed on in 1995 after a failed liver transplant. Check out his
performance in this film.
Message To Love: The 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival
- Bruce Gary
- Super-cool drummer with The Knack - subsequently a top session and
touring musician with musicians such as Jack Bruce.

so he's still playing himself in...)

- Dave Grusin
- Respected Oscar and Grammy-winning jazz pianist and film composer.
Collaborated with Roger McGuinn of the Byrds to write "Child Of The
Universe" - the theme song for "Candy"

a sense of humor.... He was a pal with the Zeppo boys - who found his
folk side appealing.

Hold On!
- Mike Heron
- Eclectic singer-songwriter in Incredible String Band. Mis-categorized
by rock writers as a whimsical folkie. However - on his first solo
album he was joined by no less than Pete Townshend and Keith Moon!
Maybe the critics got him wrong...? (Duh!)
Be Glad For The Song Has No Ending
Retying The Knot
- The Honeycombs
- One-hit wonders ("Have I The Right?" in 1964) led by girl
drummer Ann "Honey" Lantree. One of the all-time great drum thumpers!
Dave Clark with a beehive!
Go-Go Mania!
- Son House
- Seminal Delta blues musician who influenced everyone - even the great
Robert Johnson... Many forgotten blues musicians of the 20's, 30's and
40's were re-discovered in the early 60's - especially by the leaders of
the folk boom - and they played frequently on the folk festival circuit.
Those appearances in their sunset years had a huge impact on folk
performers and on the emerging blues-based rock bands. If you like the
Stones, Who, Zeppelin, Free etc etc - check out these great bluesmen in
this film...
Festival!
- Steve Howe (Yes)
- Brief appearance by the future Yes-man in the group "Tomorrow" - led by
the legendary Keith West.
Smashing Time
- Mississippi John Hurt
- Venerable old blues man. Should have been just plain old "John Hurt" -
but the British actor John Hurt had claimed the name first (!) By
rights the blues singer would have been plain "John Hurt" - and the
actor who starred in movies such as "Scandal" and "10 Rillington Place"
would have been billed as "Derbyshire John Hurt"
Festival!
- The Idle Race
- The first group led by Jeff Lynne - this Birmingham band's lack of
commercial success eventually led Lynne to joining friendly rivals -
The Move. And that led to The Electric Light Orchestra - which led to
producing George Harrison, Tom Petty - and suddenly the Traveling
Wilburys were with us. And that finally led to producing the Beatles
reunion songs.
So you see what a little failure can do?! The lack of success was
unfair though - because the Idle Race were a terrific little band.
Pop Down
- The Incredible String Band
- The folkie Beatles... The acoustic version of The Band... Led Zep
unplugged... There were lots of descriptions of this great British
band. They influenced the Beatles, the Stones (who tried to sign them
to their first label) the Who and Led Zep - who publicly praised them.
They have been woefully forgotten in recent years. Find out why rock's
greatest adored them...
Be Glad For The Song Has No Ending
Retying The Knot

- The ringmaster of the Stones circus - in every sense - and the
writer/producer behind the 1966 #1 hit of his young protege Chris

Message To Love: The 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival
- Al Kooper

A Rolling Stone" Few weeks later accompanied Dylan to Newport for the
1965 folk festival. Got up on stage with him and was part of the
historic moment when Dylan went electric in public

60's - early 70's
Message To Love: The 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival
- Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller
- Seminal rock 'n' roll writers. it took two nice Jewish boys from New
York to shape up rock's early energy, add wit and craft songs that are
still remembered today. However - their songs from this film... Well

- Jeff Lynne
- Talented singer/songwriter/producer started the local 'Brum'
(Birmingham) band The Idle Race. Then he was invited to join local
rivals The Move. Within a short space of time - he proposed the
separation of the bands into two components. The poppier singles
continued from The Move - but he had an idea to develop the string sound
that the Beatles had pioneered with songs such as "I Am The Walrus" and
"Blue Jay Way" in a new band called The Electric Light Orchestra. So
timely and successful was ELO that it rapidly eclipsed the Move and
became a 70's staple.
Probably his proudest moment has been producing the two Beatles
'reunion' tracks "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love." Check out very early
Jeff Lynne - with the Idle Race
Pop Down
- Taj Mahal
- In 1968 everyone was into the blues. And into taking cool names.
Somehow - I can't imagine that there are many Indian blues singers
wandering around Bombay and Calcutta calling themselves "White House" or
"Buckingham Palace." Anyway - Taj Mahal was - and remains - a very cool
bluesman
The Rolling Stones Rock 'n' Roll Circus
- Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill
- Brill Street building writers at their best. They NEVER lost that
writin' feelin'...
Wild In The Streets
- Ray Manzarek
- Doors' keyboard player
Message To Love: The 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival
- Sir George Martin
- Sir George received an Oscar nomination for his "Hard Day's Night"
score. And should have received another for his luscious "Yellow
Submarine" score. Experiencing it in 6-track stereo enhances the beauty
of the writing and arranging.

- Roger McGuinn
- The 'Byrd' who created that jingle-jangle sound - and who as the leader
of the band dubbed 'the American Beatles' - was an ideal interviewee to
discuss the impact in America of "A Hard Day's Night". For Candy's
theme song "Child Of The Universe" - he collaborated with jazz
musician/film composer Dave Grusin

musicians... In this film - he sits in with John Lennon...

- Joni Mitchell
- A not-to-be-missed performance in this film. Not just her singing. But
she gives an impassioned speech which absolutely nails the problems of
the hippie generation as it came of age...
Message To Love: The 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival
- Zoot Money
- Much respected British keyboard player. He ran Zoot Money and His Big
Roll Band among many combos over the years. In this film he appears in
his band Dantalion's Chariot with Andy Summers - AND acts the part of
"Mr. Love" in this sci-fi psychedelic movie
Pop Down
- The Monkees

33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee
The Monkees - Pilot Episode
- Matt Monro
- English balladeer who had US and UK hits - and recorded
theme for "From Russia With Love" In this film he has to sing a
frighteningly dreadful song about pop groups - including lyrics about
the Stones. Imagine Mel Torme having to croon lyrics about Limp
Bizkit!!!
Go-Go Mania!
- Hugo Montenegro
- The Good, The Bad and The Unbelievable.... How did Hugo get hooked into
this one?!
Toomorrow
- The Moody Blues
- As the 70's wore on the Moody Blues were regarded as less and less
'hip' Perhaps it was the hairspray.... (They did go a little bit
coiffed.) But their performance of "Nights In White Satin" in this film
- is totally killer.

30 Is A Dangerous Age, Cynthia
- Jim Morrison
- His last major performance with The Doors
Message To Love: The 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival
- Graham Nash
- In the late 60's scene Graham was everyone's favorite to hang with. The
Beatles invited him to be among their close pals when they performed
"All You Need Is Love" to 400 million TV viewers in June 1967. And
Donovan invited him to tea when he was making this short film in 1968.
There's a brief glimpse of that tea party with Graham in this short
film.

Message To Love: The 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival
- Brian Poole
- Brian Poole was a singer who had a few hits in the early 60's with his
backing group The Tremeloes. By 1966 the hits had dried up and Poole
decided to ditch his group. This short film offers a snapshot of Poole
as he launched his solo career.
The demoralized Tremeloes launched their own career at the same time.
Odds were on Poole of course - but irony is a mischievous lady... The
'Trems' as they were affectionately - known became huge - larger than
their earlier success - but Poole sank without trace - put on weight and
took the one job where he knew he could depend on a steady supply of
meat - he became a butcher!
It was as though Elvis had dumped the Jordanaires and they had become
monstrously successful - while he languished and just became a bloated
lounge singer in Vegas with an appetite for fresh hamburger...
- Dollybirds!
- Tommy Quickly
- Singer discovered by Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Recorded one of the

at his flower power best with seminal psychedelic rockers Dantalion's

I can't stand still coz you've got me goin'
Your slacks are low and your hips are showin'
