The MODS & ROCKERS 2000
Fave Musicians Guide

The films in the festival spotlight an astonishing array of British, American and Canadian musicians. Most of them are seen performing - in living Technicolor! In a few cases the musician is involved in the movie as a composer or playing on the soundtrack. So - check out the movies featuring your favorites!

Several of the musicians are associated with more than one film in the festival - and you can check out each film.

There are capsule descriptions to provide background on some of the musicians - particularly those who have had a lower profile in recent years - or who never achieved the highest pinnacles of fame.

Brian Auger
After starting out with Steampacket (which included Mick Fleetwood, Peter Green and Rod Stewart) he then became organ-playing leader of the Brian Auger Trinity - which teamed with singer Julie "Jools" Driscoll to record hit "Wheel's On Fire". (Driscoll re-recorded the song in the 90's as the theme song of "Absolutely Fabulous") Auger has acting cameos in the Monkees special and - possibly in Pop Down (no one can remember!) These days Brian is based in L.A. and still playing cool music under his Oblivion Express band name. He even has a new album released in July 2000 !

Rare appearance on film by the Canadian troubadour - who in the early 90's was close to becoming son-in-law to the much younger Wally George - ranting right-wing TV host - and father of Cohen's then-squeeze Rebecca de Mornay! (Having Wally as his father-in-law would have inspired a few good tunes from Lenny!)

Hailed as a fresh face and a super-cool vocalist on her breakthrough in 1968 with Brian Auger Trinity - they had a big hit with Bob Dylan's "Wheel's On Fire". ("Jools" re-recorded the song in the 90's to be used as the theme song of "Absolutely Fabulous") She was originally fan club secretary for the Yardbirds - before their manager (and her future husband) Giorgio Gomelski suggested she take up singing in seminal group Steampacket (which included Mick Fleetwood, Peter Green and Rod Stewart.) Later married to top jazz/rock fusion musician Keith Tippett.

Chris Farlowe
Brit rocker produced by Mick Jagger - including a 1966 UK #1 with Jagger's own "Out Of Time" Career went off the rails when he revealed himself to be a closet neo-Nazi - including a love of Third Reich paraphernalia and philosophy. Like a pre-plastic surgery David Duke with a raspy voice...

Go-Go Mania!
The Four Pennies
Four lads who were one-hit wonders from Blackburn, Lancashire (of 4,000 holes fame) They were pioneers (with The Searchers) of a British folk-rock sound. Their big hit was a gentle love song called "Juliet" The trouble began when they recorded a Leadbelly song "Black Girl" as a follow-up. Too many people in Britain at the time thought like Chris Farlowe... (see above!) Bass player Fritz Fryer went on to produce Squeeze and Motorhead (!)

Astonishingly underrated Irish blues-rock guitarist - with his band Taste. Was wearing tartan (plaid) shirts when Neil Young was still in buckskin - and before Kurt Cobain was a twinkle in his dealer's eye... Rory was a great guitar player AND he invented the grunge look in 1969! Sadly passed on in 1995 after a failed liver transplant. Check out his performance in this film.

The Honeycombs
One-hit wonders ("Have I The Right?" in 1964) led by girl drummer Ann "Honey" Lantree. One of the all-time great drum thumpers! Dave Clark with a beehive!
Go-Go Mania!
Son House
Seminal Delta blues musician who influenced everyone - even the great Robert Johnson... Many forgotten blues musicians of the 20's, 30's and 40's were re-discovered in the early 60's - especially by the leaders of the folk boom - and they played frequently on the folk festival circuit. Those appearances in their sunset years had a huge impact on folk performers and on the emerging blues-based rock bands. If you like the Stones, Who, Zeppelin, Free etc etc - check out these great bluesmen in this film...
Festival!
Steve Howe (Yes)
Brief appearance by the future Yes-man in the group "Tomorrow" - led by the legendary Keith West.
Smashing Time
Mississippi John Hurt
Venerable old blues man. Should have been just plain old "John Hurt" - but the British actor John Hurt had claimed the name first (!) By rights the blues singer would have been plain "John Hurt" - and the actor who starred in movies such as "Scandal" and "10 Rillington Place" would have been billed as "Derbyshire John Hurt"
Festival!
The Idle Race
The first group led by Jeff Lynne - this Birmingham band's lack of commercial success eventually led Lynne to joining friendly rivals - The Move. And that led to The Electric Light Orchestra - which led to producing George Harrison, Tom Petty - and suddenly the Traveling Wilburys were with us. And that finally led to producing the Beatles reunion songs. So you see what a little failure can do?! The lack of success was unfair though - because the Idle Race were a terrific little band.
Pop Down
The Incredible String Band
The folkie Beatles... The acoustic version of The Band... Led Zep unplugged... There were lots of descriptions of this great British band. They influenced the Beatles, the Stones (who tried to sign them to their first label) the Who and Led Zep - who publicly praised them. They have been woefully forgotten in recent years. Find out why rock's greatest adored them...

Jeff Lynne
Talented singer/songwriter/producer started the local 'Brum' (Birmingham) band The Idle Race. Then he was invited to join local rivals The Move. Within a short space of time - he proposed the separation of the bands into two components. The poppier singles continued from The Move - but he had an idea to develop the string sound that the Beatles had pioneered with songs such as "I Am The Walrus" and "Blue Jay Way" in a new band called The Electric Light Orchestra. So timely and successful was ELO that it rapidly eclipsed the Move and became a 70's staple. Probably his proudest moment has been producing the two Beatles 'reunion' tracks "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love." Check out very early Jeff Lynne - with the Idle Race

Taj Mahal
In 1968 everyone was into the blues. And into taking cool names. Somehow - I can't imagine that there are many Indian blues singers wandering around Bombay and Calcutta calling themselves "White House" or "Buckingham Palace." Anyway - Taj Mahal was - and remains - a very cool bluesman

And Donovan invited him to tea when he was making this short film in 1968. There's a brief glimpse of that tea party with Graham in this short film.

Brian Poole
Brian Poole was a singer who had a few hits in the early 60's with his backing group The Tremeloes. By 1966 the hits had dried up and Poole decided to ditch his group. This short film offers a snapshot of Poole as he launched his solo career. The demoralized Tremeloes launched their own career at the same time. Odds were on Poole of course - but irony is a mischievous lady... The 'Trems' as they were affectionately - known became huge - larger than their earlier success - but Poole sank without trace - put on weight and took the one job where he knew he could depend on a steady supply of meat - he became a butcher! It was as though Elvis had dumped the Jordanaires and they had become monstrously successful - while he languished and just became a bloated lounge singer in Vegas with an appetite for fresh hamburger...
