FESTIVAL OPENING NIGHT!
A SALUTE TO THE PIONEERS OF ROCK 'N' ROLL MOVIES
SPECIAL DOUBLE-FEATURE!!
TWO CLASSIC BILL HALEY & THE COMETS FILMS
IN-PERSON APPEARANCE BY THE COMETS!
ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK
-
This was the first-ever rock 'n' roll feature film. It was shot in January 1956 - and premiered just six weeks later in March 1956! - preceding another rock flick "The Girl Can't Help It" by 9 months. The film was very loosely inspired by the story of Bill Haley & The Comets - who starred as themselves. Also featuring The Platters and pioneering DJ Alan Freed. The soundtrack featured 10 songs by Haley & the original Comets. Teenage audiences throughout the world - and especially in Britain - RIOTED when watching this movie!
-
DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK
-
The first-ever rock 'n' roll movie sequel! After the runaway success of the first film - veteran B-movie producer Sam Katzman sensed he was onto a good thing and rushed out a second movie starring Bill Haley & The Comets just 9 months later. It co-starred Little Richard and Alan Freed. It was very early days in the rock 'n' roll movie world and this is one of the movies that inspired all the hundreds of look-alike, sound-alike, plot-alike jukebox musicals that followed. All the "That-evil-rock-n-roll-will-corrupt-our-kids-we-have-to-stamp-it-out" clichés started here!
The evening will feature a Q&A with all 5 surviving members of the original lineup of The Comets - and Mrs. Bill "Cuppy" Haley (married to Bill Haley 1952-1960)

Uncut Full-Length Version!!
Rated "X" on original release!
No One Under 17 Will Be Admitted to this Screening!
A MUST-SEE For David Bowie Fans!
-
David Bowie's first hero was Anthony Newley. In 1968 Newley was at the peak of his career as a composer ("Stop The World" "The Smell Of The Greasepaint" "Willy Wonka") and actor (David Lean's "Oliver Twist ""Dr. Doolittle" "Sweet November") He envisaged "Hieronymus Merkin" to be his magnum opus… his equivalent of Fellini's "8-1/2"… His "Sgt. Pepper." And it was all those things and more. (Though perhaps the "Sgt. Pepper" it most resembles is the 1978 Robert Stigwood kitsch-fest movie starring The Bee Gees!)
This is the most outrageous film we have ever shown in six years of The Mods & Rockers Film Festival. Still need convincing to attend? The lead actress is Joan Collins (at that time married to Newley) playing a temptress named "Polyester Poontang"! That pretty much explains why you miss this X-rated classic at your cultural peril!
