JAILHOUSE ROCK

(1957, 96 mins, Warner Bros, Directed by Richard Thorpe)

Our salute to Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller - one of the greatest songwriter/producer teams in rock 'n' roll history - leads off with Elvis Presley’s landmark 1957 film for which they wrote most of the songs (and in which Stoller made a cameo appearance as a pianist). In his third film, Elvis plays a young man serving a term for manslaughter. His cellmate is a former country music star who introduces him to the record business. Once the King is released from stir, he quickly rises to the top as a rock ‘n’ roll singer. But will he remember how he got there?! One of the best Elvis films, it features slam-bang Leiber & Stoller songs and that jawdroppingly-great “Jailhouse Rock” production sequence.

SMOKEY JOE'S CAFÉ

(2002, 105 mins, HBO, Directed by Don Roy King)

The deftly filmed version of the Broadway spectacular that celebrated over 40 songs from the pioneering rock ‘n’ roll canon of Leiber & Stoller – in an exhilarating non-stop revue. Among their classic songs featured in the film: "Hound Dog" "Kansas City" "Yakety Yak" "Charlie Brown" "Stand By Me" "Love Potion No. 9" "Searchin'" "Young Blood" "Is That All There Is?"
