- Double Feature Salute to rock ‘n’ roll songwriting legends Leiber & Stoller!
Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller In-Person! Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of “Jailhouse Rock”! Tribute to Elvis Presley!
Friday July 27, 2007 - 7:30pm
Egyptian Theatre, Hollywood
- JAILHOUSE ROCK
- (1957, 96 mins, Warner Bros, Directed by Richard Thorpe)
- Our salute to Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller - one of the greatest songwriter/producer teams in rock 'n' roll history - leads off with Elvis Presley’s landmark 1957 film for which they wrote most of the songs (and in which Stoller made a cameo appearance as a pianist). In his third film, Elvis plays a young man serving a term for manslaughter. His cellmate is a former country music star who introduces him to the record business. Once the King is released from stir, he quickly rises to the top as a rock ‘n’ roll singer. But will he remember how he got there?! One of the best Elvis films, it features slam-bang Leiber & Stoller songs and that jawdroppingly-great “Jailhouse Rock” production sequence.
Mike Stoller, Elivis Presley and Jerry Leiber - SMOKEY JOE'S CAFÉ
- (2002, 105 mins, HBO, Directed by Don Roy King)
- The deftly filmed version of the Broadway spectacular that celebrated over 40 songs from the pioneering rock ‘n’ roll canon of Leiber & Stoller – in an exhilarating non-stop revue. Among their classic songs featured in the film: "Hound Dog" "Kansas City" "Yakety Yak" "Charlie Brown" "Stand By Me" "Love Potion No. 9" "Searchin'" "Young Blood" "Is That All There Is?"
